The Global Health Body Issues Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Under a tenth of patients who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, caution the global health agency as it issues its first guidance on the drugs.

With more than one billion people worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

Based on estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be managed with thorough and lifelong treatment," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are major barriers to universal access to the jabs that can help people shift considerable weight, explains the agency.

Despite the present most optimistic scenario, the production of such drugs might only reach approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.

The guideline urges countries and companies to widen access, via strategies like voluntary licensing.

A patent on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

How Obesity Drugs Work

GLP-1 drugs replicate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and boost the sense of being full so individuals eat less.

People usually start to lose weight in the initial weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Research suggests users may regain a significant portion within a year of stopping the drug, because their usual appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese raises your likelihood for contracting health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was associated with over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
