The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and this week research predicted his energy policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As confusing as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and since the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; instead, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to escape undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for other people, specifically for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a form of radical love concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best Among Us
So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in numbers during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

The nation is most protected, in other words, through connection to the best about American history, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and magnificent, specifically the model of Christ.
